“People do not decide to become extraordinary. They decide to accomplish extraordinary things.”
– Sir Edmund Hilary
If anyone in Bryan/College Habitat for Humanity’s 28-year history personifies Sir Edmund’s quote, it’s Jim Davis. Jim arrived in College Station in 1972 with his wife, Louise, and their four children to begin his career at Texas A&M University. Little did he know that volunteering to help build the first Habitat home for fellow church members Victor and Amelia Gonzales would lead to a staff position at the fledgling organization.
Jim’s contributions as a volunteer and staff member are beyond measure. During his tenure, Jim became a construction and property development expert, helping Habitat build more than 260 homes for families in need of decent, affordable housing.
But his contributions went far beyond the physical aspects of the work. Through his actions, he demonstrated his strong belief in God by offering friendship, guidance and a smile to every Habitat family member. He always offered help to anyone who needed it. The same was true for his fellow Habitat staff members. Jim was the first person they would ask when no one else had an answer!
When asked what kept him coming back to Habitat year after year, Jim said it was because of what Habitat teaches the families.
“They learn to build, they learn to work with people, they learn what it means to own a house before they ever get in it,” he said. “When they put that much work into it, they’re proud of it, and they take care of it. That makes a big difference.”
Jim retired from B/CS Habitat in 2016, but the impact of his work lives on in the homes he built and the countless lives he touched.
Jim has done so much for so many, and now we want to honor him. B/CS Habitat, his friends, and spiritual family are raising funds to build the Jim Davis Home for one of our eligible partner families. Our hope is that you will help us honor Jim by making a financial contribution toward construction costs for the home.
