Every workday, Mireya Zuniga drives two and half hours commuting from her home base in Huntsville, Texas, to her job in Bryan, Texas.
It makes for a longer day and shortens the time she gets to spend with her son, Christopher, who is 10.
Unable to find a decent, affordable place to rent in Bryan, the two have been living with family friends in Huntsville. When a co- worker told her about Bryan/College Station Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program, she jumped at the chance to apply. She remembers receiving word that she had been accepted into the program.
“That day was a day full of happiness,” she said. “It was one of the most important days for me. I couldn’t believe that I would finally be able to give my son a home.”
Mireya says that Christopher is her greatest inspiration because he motivates her to get up every day so she can work hard and give him a better life. As for Christopher, his favorite pastimes are reading, playing the violin and playing soccer and video games!
The move to Bryan was an important change for both of them, what with a new home, a new city, a new school for Christopher and new friends. Not having to commute two hours every workday is also a blessing and a money saver.
Mireya refers to the sponsors and volunteers who helped fund and build her home as angels.
“May God bless them and give them double what they are doing for us,” she said. “We will always be eternally grateful.”
